electrical violations?

Posted by Ellie on February 27, 2002 at 15:25:18:

I've lived in my brownstone apartment for almost five years and in the last six months, we've been having significant problems with our wiring. We don't have enough outlets, and about half of our outlets are two-pronged. Recently, we've had appliances short out (two computer monitors and one microwave).

We complained to our landlord (who lives in the building) about a month ago. So far, he hasn't brought anyone in to look at it.

My husband is concerned that if we rely on the landlord, he'll bring in unlicensed electricians and the fix will be worse than the original problem. I tend to agree, but if we call in the city inspectors, the city might not allow us to stay in the apartment and it will certainly jeopardize our relationship with the landlord. We would appreciate his reference in this competitive market should we be forced to move.

What are our options? I feel like I'm choosing between our home and our safety.
