They were discussing Rent Controls in the Ontario Legislature yesterday.
It seems that at a meeting in Stoney Creek, Mr. Harris said that when
rents are only controlled by the "Free Markets" that "rents will go down."
This seems to indicate that the Mike Harris government has already
decided that Rent Controls will be eliminated, even before they have
done any studies or had any hearings as the Minister of Housing has
promised.
It also seems absurd for him to conclude that when there are no controls
on the rate of increase on rents that they will go down. I have no
idea how he came to that conclusion.
Additionally, if Mr. Harris wants "Free Markets," why did they pass
Bill 26, which gives municipalities the right to ban "basement apartments,"
which will limit the supply of housing; the anti-thesis of a "Free Market"?
In defense of his Premier, Mr. Leach, the Minister of Housing stated in
the Legislature that the Toronto Star which he painted as a left-wing
newspaper said Rent Controls were a bad thing, but he ignored that the
majority of the Star's Saturday advertising revenues come from Real
Estate, and that the industry paying for the largest amount of ad space
each week is the Real Estate industry.
He then said that the Toronto Sun says Rent Controls are bad, and that the
Globe and Mail had a February 6 editorial against Rent Control.
Of course he didn't mention that the Globe and Mail article said rent
controls were bad for economic reasons and then did not give any economic
reasons and that most of the issues discussed were not even related to
Rent Controls, but were issues such as zoning and building standards
(issues that have nothing to do with Rent Controls). If you have read
my letter to the editor of the Globe and Mail, you will see that it is
very probable that the removal of Rent Controls will have a very serious
negative impact on the economy and attempts at job creation in Ontario.
It seems that newspapers have more sway with the government than the
Citizens, since all the polls I have seen show the majority of people
support rent controls.
And where are these public hearings, Al Leach, the Minister of Housing
promised on Rent Controls?
