Study of Tenant Participation in Private Rental

Posted by Michel Frojmovic on January 27, 1997 at 22:38:59:

The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)has commissioned a
study to prepare an inventory of cases of tenant participation in private
rental housing in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and
Australia.

Considerable attention has been given to promoting tenant participation
in social and public housing, based on the benefits that this provides in
the form of enhanced tenant self-esteem, control, social networking,
skills development and reduced operating costs to the landlord. CMHC is
interested in investigating whether these benefits have or can be
replicated in a private rental context.

The study will focus on identifying examples of partnerships between
tenants and private property managers/landlords. Examples could range
from informal to more formal initiatives. The study will document the
impetus for the participation and the perspective of both the
manager/landlord and tenants regarding perceived benefits or issues.

Any information on specific participation initatives, or contact names of
individuals familiar with the subject would be welcome.

Thank you,
