I had the same problem in NJ once.

The landlord gave me an excuse to deduct some money from the rent. Since I new he would try and deduct this from the security deposit, I didn't pay my last months rent. He had his lawyer call me, but we both knew that there was effectively nothing he could do.

If you don't pay the last months rent, chances are very good you'll get away with it.
