Can My Landlord Do This?

Posted by Amos on June 30, 1997 at 12:30:29:

i have been living in an apartment in brooklyn for 5 years. i signed a lease for the first year and a half i have been living without a lease since. my landlord just informed me that he wants to raise the rent from $1600 to $2100. there are 5 units in the building. i have no idea if the building is rent stabalized or not. can my landlord do this? what are my rights? how can i find out if their is something i can do to prevent this? i currently have no lease but i can prove that i have been living there for the past 5 years.
