Depends on the city/state you are in, but in general it would depend on the
provisions of any lease, and if you have no lease, then it's most likely
30 days notice. You could argue if they told you (and it's not official until it's
in writing) on 5/2, then it's not 6/1. If you are a month-to-month tenant,
then most likely it's 30 days. Also in most places the owner cannot just
change the locks and must go through the court process, which will take longer
than a few weeks. You could probably wait him out -- verify this with a
lawyer and tell the owner you're willing to go through the court process or
otherwise negotiate something that's better for you. Also, if you have a rental
agreement, chances are that goes to the new owner, meaning you don't necessarily
have to leave just because he's selling the place. A new owner "assumes"
all leases in place. It appears this is a scam to deliver the building empty.
Do a little research, talk to a lawyer and be prepared to play hardball (after
trying to negotiate).
