Boycotting State Goods

Posted by Neile on May 08, 1997 at 00:25:26:

The following has been faxed to 57 comunity boards in NYC. If you support it, contact your local CB and let them know.
Better yet, speak to it at the nect public sesssion.
-------------------------------
COMMUNITY BOARD RESOLUTION CALLING FOR A BOYCOTT OF STATE PRODUCE AND DAIRY PENDING PERMANENT EXTENSION OF TENANT PROTECTION LAWS.

CB#__ believes that the expiration of New York State Tenant Protection Laws (the "rent laws") will cause individual hardship, increased homelessness and neighborhood dislocation.

CB#__ holds upstate legislators responsible for allowing rent laws' to expire. While these legislators have no affected constituencies or inherent interest in these matters, they have sold their votes to real estate PACs seeking an end to tenant protections. Nonetheless, these legislators are accountable to farmers who earn much of their revenues from downstate consumers.

Therefore, CB#__ calls for its residents, as well as all affected New Yorkers, to boycott all foodstuffs originating in districts represented by legislators who withhold support for the rent laws.

This boycott shall include, but not be limited to, milk, apples, grapes, fish, and meat; as well as such processed foods as cheese, preserves, baked goods and wine. Also, for the duration of this boycott, CB#__ shall request of the Parks Department a moratorium on "farmer's markets" within its geographical boundaries .

The boycott shall commence on June 15, 1997 (the date the rent laws are scheduled to expire) and shall continue until such time as the rent laws are permanently renewed.

As this boycott is targeted towards upstate legislators, CB#__ and its residents looks forward to continued (if not greater) support of upstate farm economies following the renewal of laws that will protect our homes and preserve our communities.

Proposed Addendum: To increase its effectiveness, CB#__ calls for extending its boycott to all state produced goods including photographic film (Kodak), computers (IBM), housewares (Corning, Steuben), multi-industry (GE) plus state tourism.

Dairy: Sorrento, Polly-O, Dellwood/Tuscan, Friendship, Breakstone, Meadowbrook, Juniper Valley, MacAdam Cheese, Sedutto, Kraft.

Adopted: Manhattan CB# 3.
Pending: Manhattan CB# 2, 6, 10, 11, Queens CB# 3, 4, 8.
