Seems to me that you should have had the landlord install a new refrigerator, which would have been more economical to run. Not only would you be saving money on your electricity bill, but also wouldn't be forced to throw away food. How can you blame your landlord for your bad judgement? When I had a new refrigerator installed, my electricity bill dropped by about $20. I suggest you swallow your pride and ask for a new refrigerator delivered as soon as possible.
