Adding Occupant to Lease

Posted by Steven Rinehart on September 09, 1997 at 10:05:45:

I understand that a person living alone in a rent-stabilized apt. can share with
an occupant (non-leaseholder) and that occupant's immediate family--say, wife and child. My question is this:
If the leaseholder requests that the occupant be added to the lease, 1) is the landlord
obligated in any way to do this? can the landlord do anything worse than refuse?,
and 2) if landlord agrees, is this a new lease, subject to an appropriate
rent hike?

concerned mainly about making things worse than better by offering this to the landlord.
