As long as you don't as for something that runs afoul of the various civil rights regulations out there (implying discrimination by race, religion, gender, ethnicity, etc.) you can ask for pretty much anything you want. I'd start with employment verification, previous landlord references, and reports from various credit agencies. Do your homework to make sure that anything a prospecitive tenent gives you is legitimate. You could make arrangements to report to credit agencies if the tenent defaults. Also, you can ask for more than one months security. In a situation like yours, I'd get at least two months, maybe three (if the market allows this - alot of tenents will not want to pay this).
