verbal contract w/landlord, is that OK?

Posted by Pilar Segura on December 23, 1997 at 12:01:25:

I will begin to rent an apt starting this week, and the landlord informed me that there is no "formal lease", it is only a verbal contract. Should I feel safe? I got to know the landlord through a friend, but I just don't feel completely safe. Should I push for something signed? It's a one-year lease, and we've already discussed how the rent will increase if I decided to stay on longer. I would really like some advice, thank you.
