: I looked at an upscale apt complex last week in Northwest Indiana . The rental agent explained the rent, charges, and security deposit in full. They require a $400 pet deposit plus $20 a month per pet. only $200 of the deposit is refundable when you move. It sounds like a charge to me. Is this common practice? Is it legal?

Don't know Indiana, but I've heard of the deposit and charge in other
areas. But a deposit is a deposit and should be fully returned unless
there's damage. It's a scam and you should complain to the local
Attorney General and consumer groups.
