i live in a rent controlled building in the L.E.S.
I got the apartment as a sublet for 800 dollars a month,
and six months after, signed a lease in my name for 887 dollars a month.
last year they raised the rent to 928 dollars, and now they're raising it
to 948 dollars. Due to personal and financial circumstances I can not afford
the rent. I asked for a reduction and they said no because I was now renting it
for under market price which she said was 1000 dollars. This apartment building
is owned by a company who owns many buildings in LES. The building itself is
not in good condition and I suspect that there could have been illegal increases
in rent. Do I have any rights to refuse to pay said rent and to ask for a new
lease with a more reasonable rent-or must i just move-which i do not want to do
nor can afford to do?
