Air Conditioner -- Must Landlord replace?

Posted by Rudi on June 17, 1998 at 15:17:11:

Reposting the following. Hope someone can help me out with this!

My NYC rent-stabilized apartment has a built-in air-conditioner, which was in my apartment when I moved in, back in 1991. It is built into the window, which was specially modified to allow the air conditioner. Thus if I remove the air conditioner and discard it, there will be a large hole.

The air conditioner broke down recently and has to be replaced. Question is, does the landlord have to replace this or must I do so? If so, are there any specific cases or regulations or whatnot that I can site to my landlord if he gives me a hard time? Any thoughts on the subject would be appreciated.
