I just moved in this month to a friend's rent stabilized apartment. He's charging me $180 above the regular rent, and I was unaware of this at the time.
He did not give me a lease, and the landlord now wants his apartment back, as he claims that my friend no longer lives there.
I know tha my friend has kept the phone, and all bills in his name so that he could prove residency if necessary.
Can the landlord really push someone out?
I would like to negotiate a new lease with the landlord, though I have not had any contact with him yet.
If I contact the landlord now, I feel that I am stepping on my friends toes.
If I keep quiet, I am not taking care of myself and may be on the street.
I would appreciate any advise.
