I just went through the same circumstance in a manhattan coop building.
When I moved in I was given vague assurances that my apt. was stabilized
but it was not. The new mgt. company hit me with a giant increase. My
solution? I went hat-in-hand to the mgt. co. and groveled for a reduction
in the increase as I was a long-term good tenant etc. I got a modest
reduction but was told that the full increase would be in effect next year.
I know its demeaning but maybe pleading and crying get you another year.

Seems like the only hope for us non-stabilized tenants would be for wall
street to go into a real dive and bring down the the real estate market
with it. (Those wall street kids who are now willing to pay outrageous rents
would likely have to move back with their folks.) Of course, our jobs may
be at risk too. Realistically, finding a reasonable replacement apt.
is very difficult; over the next year I will be actively looking (including
offering bribes to supers for tips). But I am resigned to moving from Manhattan
(and probably NY)after many years. Sucks.
