My landlord signed a document that we could break our lease early. The document stated that we understood that part or all of our security would be withheld based on how long it took to re-rent the apt. Other tenants have told us that the new person moved in 2 days later. He is saying the new person moved in on the 15th of the following month. We said fine give us half but he still refuses. He actually said to us that he had to use the rest of the security money to make improvements so he could charge a higher rent!!!!!!
I have been told that leases are public records. Other than a subpoena, how can I get a copy of the new tenant's lease? I'm afraid that if I subpoena he will draw up a fake lease. On top of all of this our landlord was a real-estate lawyer and very slimey!!!!
