Carpet Removal

Posted by Jason Miller on November 27, 1998 at 13:43:30:

I've rented and generously maintained a small So.California home for 5.5 years. When I moved in, the living room was newly carpeted with white bourbur carpeting. After 3 years of use and fairly regular machine cleanings, the white carpeting was dingy and discolored, particularly in the traffic areas. I finally got tired of the high maintenance carpeting and removed it, revealing hardwood flooring underneath. The hardwood floor was attractive, but still needed refinishing, which I elected not to do. Since I removed the carpeting without informing my landlady, can I claim that normal wear and tear took it's toll on the carpeting or am I liable for it?
