sorry this is so long winded...but, we moved into our house two years ago, and signed a 6 month lease. at the end of that, we signed another lease, this time for a year. when that was up in may, our landlord wanted us to sign another one year lease, through may 1999. we told her that we couldn't sign for a full year, because we would both moving out of the area in december for job reasons. we offered a six month lease, or a month to month agreement, but she told us that whether or not we signed again, the lease automatically renewed for another year anyway. (it does say this- but we figured she'd be reasonable and negotiate with us..yeah right) so she said as long as there was a tenant to take our place, she'd let us out. we paid a full month's rent to a rental agency to show the house, and they found two tenants. both backed out when they met our crazy landlord.(she refused to show them the lease before they signed it) now, we've moved out, started new jobs in another city, and she 1) won't give us back our security deposit, and 2) wants us to pay rent until she finds someone stupid enough to move in. she wouldn't even inspect the house when we moved. so all we could do was take pictures and hope that nothing happens to the house. what are my options? we've gone out of our way, giving her 6 months notice that we would be moving out, and then paying hundreds of dollars to find a new tenant (which is her responsibility, anyway). help!
