I checked the law in Michigan on their Legislation web site and it indicates that the landlord must submit a list of damages along with a check for the remainder of the deposit within 30 days from termination. It also states that within 45 days they are to obtain a judgement in a court for any amount to be withheld from the tenant. The law ends with a statement saying that if the landlord fails to comply with the laws, the tenant is entitled to twice the amount of the deposit withheld.
