Breaking a Lease

Posted by Sarah Hultman on May 20, 1999 at 17:09:50:

I live in an apartment in Philadelphia and have to break the lease to go to school in NY. Though originally I was told I could sublet, now they want the name on the lease changed and they want to charge me a significant amount of money to do this. ($450 if I find a new renter, $900 if they find one.) None of this is mentioned in my lease. Any suggestions on where I might find legal proof that they can't do this to me?
