Boots! Keep your June rent and put it to good use elsewhere.
If pressed, ask your ll if s/he can prove, "beyond any and all
reasonable doubt, in a court of law, under oath" that s/he did,
in fact, incur a 500$ debt to advertise the apartment. Stand tall,
stand firm. You might also want to perform a little investigating
on your own to see if, in fact, the ll has a broker who handles
advertising for apartments in your bldg. Also, is there a
managing agent who might also do some advertising. (And the
chances are pretty good that is there is a managing agent and/or
broker involved, with a lot more footwork, either or both can
be traced back to the ll in all too many cases. You can see
where this goes.)
