From the New York Daily News, Friday, August 6th:
A law protecting 10,000 loft tenants expired July 1. Although city officials had sought a five-year extension, the Senate and Assembly passed bills extending the law until March 31, 2001.
At Pataki's behest, the loft-law renewal was coupled with a similar extension of the Quick Draw video game that some critics say is addictive to vulnerable players. Played in bars, restaurants and other gathering places, it is a $148 million-a-year cash cow for the state.
"I'm still trying to dislodge my fingers from holding my nose," grumbled Assemblyman Tom Duane (D-Manhattan), who voted for the coupled items. "It's a perfect example of what's wrong with Albany."
