yes i am from the bronx NYC. i dont even think this is a legal 2 fam house he has 2 apt. up here in the attic, both rented. the papers say i have been here for 6 yrs and the ll and i entered a verbal agreement of 450 per month and that i owe him 2700 which i do not. i guess he threw that in to make it sound better. i have 3 lil dogs and am going to have major proble,s finding a place to live w/1 dog let alone 3 i dont know what to do i mean i recvd some emails telling me to talk to the court attn. and i will and i will also take the papers and go to the court asap. thanks to all for the info
i have been telling the ll that the electric is very bad in this house its only set up for one family so u cant even use the toaster w/the microwave or it will blow out, also i have a feeling there is asbestos in this apt. is there any way i could get the owner of the house the ll to pay to have it checkd so that if there is asbestos in this apt i know who to sue for my life?? thanks lea

: You do not indicate whether you live in New York City. If you do, Mark Smith recently posted a very helpful link which explains some of the issues. I have copied the link below.

: If your unit is illegal, Multiple Dwelling Law sections 300, 301 and 302 apply. You can find them on the TenantNet website. MDL § 302 says that no rent is owed for an illegal unit, so you should stop paying rent immediately.
