How long after my lease ends does a landlord have to return my security deposit?

And, if he does not let me know in writing of any problems,within a reasonable time, does he automatically lose any right to dispute paying me?

Also, if I suspect that he spent my security deposit, can I still use this as a reason to get my money back even after my lease has expired and I have vacated the premises?
