: hi,
: i am leasing a rent stabilized apartment in forest hills ny.
: the building is managed by a management company.
: the unit is on the first floor and my bedroom is almost directly
: on top of the boiler room.
: i am very troubled by the various loud mechanical noises (pumps,
: motors constant whirring noises) coming from the boiler room and
: the trash compactor especially at night.
: i can feel the vibrations caused by the machinery when i place my
: fingers on the walls.
: is there anything i can do other than moving to another apartment
: to remedy this situation ?
: regards,

Read about Noise on the homepage of Tenant.Net.
Read about effective complaint letter writing elsewhere on Tenant.Net, then write one about the night-time use of trash compactor: it is possible that they are required to operate it only between 9-5 or 7-5 (call HPD or DHCR?).

Note: if the boiler and/or trash compactor were there before you moved in, don't expect much.
