: Maybe because the Albany trip was organized (read contained) by Shel Silver,
: his shill McKee of Tenants & Neighbors and tenants were fooled. Most other

: Pataki; it's those that allow Patakis to exist.

You mean the suburban homeowners who now control the state. The ascendence of Pataki marked the shift of political power out of the city and to the suburbs. The suburbanites could care less about rent regulation

: : : The reason that tenants are terrorized is, quite simply, that the landlords have the $$, and contribute heavily to the campaigns (i.e. buy) of our elected officials.
: : Tenants have the votes, but do not use them sensibly, if at all. Tenant groups are weak, dis-organized, and fight among themselves. Tenants are apathetic, and want to "let someone else" do the dirty work for them.
: : Witness the June, 1997 trip to Albany to lobby the legislators to renew and put teeth in the laws that protect tenants, and the poor showing (only about 5,000 tenants took the trip) sends a message to the legislators, Republicans as well as many Democrats, that they can pay only lip service to tenants needs.
: : As a result, the new laws are weaker than ever, and DHCR now is pro-landlords.
: : How many of the millions of rent-stabilized tenants voted to re-elected that darling of landlords, Gov. Pataki?
: : Until tenants decide that they have had enough, get really organized and actively lobby their legislators, until tenant leaders stop bickering among themselves and present a united front as the landlords do, things will not get better.
