What I did while I was pro per or pro se, in my rent stabilized apt. is I hired a lawyer
to be a coach, which for me was he would explain,all the procedures of the court
and help me to prepare documents for my counterclaim when he the landlord took me to court.
that was a way for me to reduce costs.Then I hired him for the trial.
