: my landlord does not provide any place to put out the garbage,
: so i am required to keep it in my apartment until its time to put it
: out on the street. Last night I got a call from the landlord because
: I had incorrectly disposed of some cans of paint. I told him I didn't
: know what the proper proceedure was and that I doubted it was really
: my responsibility to know how garbage is supposed to be placed for collection.
: I suspect that he should be required to provide an area for garbage removal,
: and that it should be his (or supers) job to properly place the garbage on
: the street. Where can I find the "law" on this?

Are you in NYC? or NYS? The shortest answer is YES: garbage is his resposibility, but recyling is shared with tenants. There might be a better answer from the main menu here on
Here is the NYC Sanitation dept website: you can read about and download Recycling info, garbage collection info, even the actual law (if memory serves...). Or use search feature on main NYC website: Those paint cans probably should have been Recycled.
