My apt is across from the roof access door and the roof door has no alarm and a lock that is easily popped open. I have no peephole or window in my door and haven't been able to find a locksmith who will drill through the door or provide any kind of assistance as far as a security system which would enable me to see what's going on in the hallway. Does anyone know if there's any way to install something without spending hundreds of $$$ and damaging the door?
You could always install a video system, but that would mean putting a camera in the hallway with the possibility that it could be stolen or damaged. Remember, you do not rent anything on the other side of that door.
The best option is to get a peephole, but as a renter, do not do it yourself without written permission from the landlord. Otherwise you could get into trouble.
I would ask the LL first, in writing. If there's no response, then call 311, make a complaint - make sure you talk to a HPD Specialist (they will try to send you to DHCR, which is incorrect) and ask for an inspection. If it checks out, then HPD should place a violation. Beyond that, getting the LL to comply is another story.
