Doorman bldg - front door locked changed - no key??

Postby msdimps » Thu May 29, 2014 11:55 am

Hi,

I have lived in a doorman building in the Bronx for 4 years and have always had a key which lets you into the front and side service doors. A few weeks ago they decided to change the front door lock, sent a notice to the tenants and they didn't provide us with a new key. When I asked for a copy of the key, I was told 'no' because there's a doorman there, He is a doorman not security. If there is someone following me and the doorman isn't there for whatever reason for that few minutes - they told me to go around to the service door (where it's dark at night).

I was told that because it is a doorman building the tenants to do not need to have a key. Is this true? Is this legal? I feel that it's putting my safety at risk.

You don't say, but if you are in a rent stabilized apartment, the denial of a key is most likely a reduction in service.

If not RS, then it might be a violation of your lease.

This would affect other tenants. Nothing like a group of angry tenants :)
