Could anyone tell me what the landlord's legal responsibilties are regarding maintaining security in the public areas of the building? I live in a rent-stabililzed building. The lock on the front door of the building had been broken for about a month, and last week someone (the super, perhaps) took out the lock entirely and removed it with a metal pull-handle, which means that anyone can walk into the building at will any time of the day or night.
Is the landlord shirking his legal responsibility? What are my options as a tenant? (I have called him to let him know what has happened, but I have received no response).
