taking over a lease

I just moved in with a girl who is currently paying $1250 for our apartment (we are splitting the rent) -- but she is moving out at the end of the month, and I will have to negotiate my own lease with the landlord. How do I make sure that I don't get taken for a ride? I am already moved in to the apartment, so does that help me or hurt me? How can I keep the rent low and manageable?
