Will Landlords Accept Month to Month?

Postby JulieA » Wed Dec 11, 2002 8:49 pm

Will most landlords agree to switch from a yearly lease to a month-to-month lease?

I'm not sur how long I want to keep my apartment, and a friend told me to just ask the landlord for a month-to-month lease, instead of renewing my lease for a year beginning in a couple of months

I have to hurry and make up my mind, as the 60 days I have to renew the lease are almost up.

For a rent stabilized tenancy, there would have to be a renewal lease in order for the landlord to obtain a rent increase.

Therefore, a landlord would not be likely to accept a month-to-month tenancy after the expiration of the current lease.

You could ask for a one-year renewal lease, with a clause letting you cancel the lease on 30-days' or 60-days' notice.
