Pay back rent?

I received a Ten Day Notice in July to remove my dogs otherwise I will be evicted. I've tried to pay rent since then but they keep returning my checks. I have a lawyer that doesn't seem to be working. I was trying to fight for my apt. since July. My lease is up in the end of December. I was waiting for court papers to fight for the apt but I haven't received them. I even received my lease renewal, signed and returned it back thinking I was gonna stay. Until recently, I found a better apt. I'm willing to move by the end of this month.

Do you think I need to return the returned rent checks $$? They want me out so I'll go, that's fine but can they bring me to court for not paying rent and/or leaving b4 my lease is up and signing my renewal?
