Totally off topic!!!

I'm a MI LL and I visit this site often for insight. I have long thought that there were some of the most knowledgeable people responding to questions. I often wondered why NYC laws were so darned involved that it requires volumes of laws, interpretations, housing department, etc etc. I just came back from a short trip to NYC after not having been there in probably 16 years. The sheer volume of people and the ability to house them is mind boggling to someone whose entire city has fewer people than our hotel building did. It has become all very clear that it would be madness not to have all the laws in place. It is wonderful that the tenants of NYC have a place such as this to explain laws to them and direct them to solutions because I can easily see how it might be impossible to fight for housing without it.

I have also wondered why people would go through all that to live in NYC. I've come away with a different perspective. Though, I could not live in NYC for long without a good prozac prescription, it is probably the most wonderful, awe inspiring place in the world. All the best and worst of civilization concentrated in that space. The housing issues are a small price to pay for that experience. So now, when I look out the windows of my home at the 5 acre site I live on ... I will no longer complain that I wish it was 10 acres. I am grateful for what I have space wise. I realize now that space is relative.

I did have several near death experiences with taxi cabs and we ultimately decided to park our new SUV safely in a garage because it was better to be INSIDE the taxi rather out. It was the first time our kids (16 and 15) ever rode in a cab!!! We came away thinking it would be a great experience to move to NY for about a year after the kids are grown. Whether we ever follow through on it or not .... only time will tell. I just hope you guys are still here if I do decide to become a tenant there!!!

Believe two things: MI is bliss compared to NYC (depending on where you are in MI) and 2) most of the housing laws do not work. It's not necessaru to have the complexity to make effective tenant protections work. Most were written by politicians who want tenants to believe they are working for them when the opposite is true. One other thing nicer about MI -- you have Vernors :) We don't ;(
