Have you spoken to the LL about updating the bathroom? Also, are you in a rent stabilized apartment?

Bathroom Update after 19 Years

Thanks for getting back to me. In answer to your questions No I have not spoken with the landlord and No I am not in a rent stablized apt. I guess I
was hoping for a leg to stand on in case he is not responsive to te update.

Well you've been in the apartment 19 years, so you should have an idea how he might respond, but first you need to ask him. You said the bathroom is moldy and crumbling, which sounds unhealthy, so maybe you could start there.

Tenants don't actually have rights to getting a bathroom update, so that would be entirely up to the LL.
