Super has no telephone number anymore

Postby joliett » Tue Feb 01, 2011 3:37 pm

The super in the building has turned off his telephone number. So the only one I can reach now is the landlord. Is this permissable by NYC law?

First, I would suggest you remove your address from your profile as landlords (or anyone for that matter) will now have your address.

Why can't you just knock on the super's door if he's in the building?

As far as I know, there are no laws saying the super must own a phone or give out the number, I don't have my super's number, I just go beat on the door or slip a note under it if it's not important, worked fine for many years.

The owner must post the name of the janitor, including phone number. See the Housing Maintenance Code at http://tenant.net/Other_Laws/HMC/new/sub2/art13.html

I would bring this to the LL's attention in writing, by mail, with a certified and/or registered letter, keeping a copy for yourself. If I were in your situation and also had the LL's e-mail address, I would also e-mail him a copy of the letter at the same time. Above the inside address on the letter I would print "BY REGISTERED/CERTIFIED MAIL & E-MAIL."

Quote the Maintenance Code to him in the letter, verbatim. Keep it short, directly, and polite, and make sure you ask him to set the situation right.
