Porter is Super's son - conflict of interest?

Postby lawful tenant » Mon Mar 28, 2011 6:38 pm

Is it not a conflict of interest for the only full time porter to be superindent's son and live with him in same apartment?

The porter reports to the super and the super always shields him from any complaints that tenants make.

The super totally listens to his son on everything. For example he convinced his father to fire 4 part time porters (one right after another). At least 3 of these porters were good, hardworking guys and kept the building really clean - much cleaner than the "so called" main porter. Yet he was afraid that they were doing such a nice job, so obviously better than the job he was doing that he made his father fire them.

In addition to doing a very bad job cleaning the building, the porter is very rude to tenants, having harassed at least 4 tenants over the last six months.

What can we as tenants do to remove this porter from the building?

It's nepotism, but it's only an issue to the LL. If he want's to allow it, there's nothing you can do about it.

I'm not even sure that qualifies as nepotism. Is there a requirement that the super and porter even be different people? Or any requirement for a porter per se?

I think it could be said that the son helps his dad maintain the building.

You can't have an Assistant Manager unless you have a Manager. They are different people.
