YOU CAN BREAK A LEASE BECAUSE OF DOMESTIC ABUSE

Postby JaneB82 » Tue Sep 13, 2011 11:24 pm

I've just found out that domestic violence is a valid reason to break a lease. My cousin has a Court Order of Protection to back it up. She TOLD this to the building manager.

Now her credit is ruined. This is just harassment. Must business in this country be so lacking in morals or compassion? The answer is no; the just get away with it.

A few times I have had a business try to get money out of me that was not due by making false claims. As soon a I'd say "LAWYER" and "TAKE YOU TO COURT" they'd miraculously back down and apologize (obviously believed I didn't have it in me). Why do they have to try to pull a fast one to begin with? This litigation culture is wrong and exhausting. Life is too short.

Landlords are something else. I've also had moneys demanded that I did not owe, but in NYC some landlords are as tough nails and unyielding, even when you are obviously right. I've had enough of "Wild West" challenging behavior. You can't be running to court every 5 minutes. Who has time?

Why are you using ALL CAPS in your title. That's considered shouting and rude.
