Illegal renovations to empty apartments

Postby flour » Tue Nov 01, 2011 10:57 pm

Some tenants died this past year and the LL is renovating their now empty apartments, but doing so illegally. There was a stop work order issued by NYC Dept of Buildings, and a notice stating so taped to the building's entrance door, but that was torn down by someone and the illegal renovations continue. The neighboring building tenants are not only disturbed by the noise, but are also afraid of fire, as there was a fire a few years ago at a building across the street, from illegal work being done, where every tenant in that building had to leave for an entire year. My life is here! How do I and the rest of the tenants go about stopping our LL from doing this illegal work, if a stop work order has been issued already, yet illegal work continues? Thank you.

Get a copy of the stop work order from the Dept. of Buildings (you might be able to get it online from the BIS system) and call the police. The police are supposed to enforce these orders. Also call the BEST squad, a group of DOB inspectors that are supposed to respond to immediate events.

Problem is all the procedures for just this sort of thing are being unofficially dropped by DOB and other agencies. They're still there; it's jus that DOB, under Bloomberg, is just a shell of its former self (and even back then it wasn't great). There's not a road map but you'll have to keep pounding away at DOB, the community board and your elected officials.

Hi All
On NYC. gov there is an email section to contact the Mayor. Avail your self of that as well as contact the DOB Best Squad.
