Channel Four just interviewed a family who is staying at a hotel because the management of their building in Battery Park City cut the power and turned off the elevator. Granted, there is a mandatory evacuation for BPC in effect but it seems the LL is overstepping his bounds. Who are they to enforce government policy?

Elevators don't work without power, and it is a lot easier to turn off the elevator than to rescue someone inside it.

Not that I'd normally agree with 10ants, one of our regular landlord apologists, but he has a point.

First, the hurricane is an "Act of God," or as Tracy Morgan said on Jimmy Kimmel, this "has Republicans written all over it."

But think a moment, being prevented from using an elevator for 1 or 2 days means you won't have to be rescued for being caught in the elevator for many hours. Of course it depends on what reasons a person might have to use the elevator. If it's to go out for food, then perhaps a tenant should have a reasonable amount of food stocked up. While not the best option, canned or frozen food can take you for a few days.

This is not, on itself, a reduction in service; it's a preclusion effort so you won't get stuck. There might be other options, but this is pretty clear.
