Raising of Rent.

Postby pedmar » Fri Apr 01, 2005 1:02 pm

Hi everyone,

I moved to Jersey city of last year July 1st 2004. I recently received a notice from my Landlord that he is raising my rent $25 as of May 1st 2005. Now I ask, can he do this months before my lease is even up? Is that legal? I thought a lease was a set contract price. And when it expires and increase can occur? Please help... This landord seems to be pretty sneaky...

thanks

LL can't raise rent before the lease expires.
Maybe just wrote wrong start date. Would get back to him/her and say...you did receive their notice of $25 rent increase to start when your new lease takes effect July 1. Thanks for the heads up and will adjust rent amount then.
Keep in mind that deposit will probably need to be adjusted as well.
