Hi Jlynne,
Unfortunately, you have made several promises to your LL that have not been kept. Although, I find his practice of raising the rent 3x in less than a year very unreasonable, you have agreed to the increase and now owe the rent.

California Tenant & Eviction Law Resources:
http://www.caltenantlaw.com/Rights.htm
http://www.tenantslegalcenter.com/html/the_tenants_legal_center.html

Search the net and call around to see if you can receive free legal advice/representation. Also check out local charities for monetary assistance.
Cali. Eviction Prevention:

Do a search using www.google.com for eviction prevention california and/or rental assistance california. There may be funding available to help you catch up on your rent. You may also be able to apply to welfare for a "one shot deal". If you are able to prevent your eviction, BE SURE to get a signed lease from your LL stating the term of your tenancy and the agreed rent for that term, so that he can't just raise it as he pleases.
Best of Luck!

Thank You All for your reply, I have spoken to my LL yesterday and he is still working with us. I do believe that he truely wanted us out, but felt sorry for all the things that have affected us since he took over. He has on more then one occation said that he could make more money if he had section 8 people living here. When my ex is working he makes good money and the LL knows this, so in away I believe he wants more money! When he raised the rent he knew we were in a bind so he did take avantage of us, but like some one pointed out we agreed to pay (under derrest)even thou we really didn't want to. (we would of been on the street, and become really ill, worse then we are now)One thing I do want to point out is someone mentioned lieing to our LL,I have never lied to him or do I entend to start, I know there's a whole lot of people who would but I'm not one of them, and I have always kept my word! If in the future he decides to evict us I will still pay him back one way or another. I don't like being ripped off and I know no body else does either. So on a closing note I would like to Thank all of You for your replys! They have helped me out alot.......... :) :)
