The mistake made by LL in the lease

Many thanks for any information at first!

We rent a apartment in Missouri. Before we moved in, Rami( a lady worked in the rental office of this apartment complex) agreed on 6-month lease with us and we still had the agreement record which has her signatures ( not the formal lease). However, on the day we signed the lease, she typed one-year lease for us. A few days later when we happened to look at the lease again, we found that in the date fields a one-year lease was typed there. We went to the rental office and talked with her. she acknowledged her mistake in typing the 6-month lease into a 12-month lease. However, according to what she said, since the lease had been signed, it’s not convenient to change in the paper work. Also she said that if we kept the apartment more than 6 months, there would be no say of such things as fines or early termination of lease agreement. She also reminded that when we decided the time to vacate, just make sure to notice her one month earlier.
Right now, we need to move out and gave the rental office notice one month earlier. they simply would not recognize what Ramie had agreed on and just hang on the wrong paper work to collect the fine ( could be over $2,000). So far Ramie has left and we have not been able to talk with her.
If from the beginning, it were us to agree on the one year lease, we would pay the fine. However, we never thought about and never talked about the one-year lease in the whole process of the moving in. It was them that made the mistake. How should we do? Many thanks for your info.
