Subsidized Unit - Adding a roommate

Postby Bravos9 » Fri Feb 12, 2016 11:56 pm

Hi all,

I live in a middle income rent stabilized apartment. Am I allowed to have a roommate like allowed for non-income restricted rent stabilized apartments? The roommate would not be added to the lease. Of note, my income does not get checked annually to make sure I still qualify.

Thanks!

When you say "middle income," do you mean a subsidized unit like a 421-a apartment? Unsubsidized regular RS units are not labeled as Middle Income. It it is subsidized, there might be special rules for your building. So you should check with DHCR on that.

But in general you have every right to have a roommate. Have you read the articles on roommates on this site?

My understanding is, you can have a roommate in income based housing, but it's based on total household income, so you may see a rent increase sometime in the future.

Standard Rent Stabilized housing has little to do with income, unless the landlord suspects you're crossed the threshold for luxury decontrol.
