Removal for major repairs

Postby DDando » Thu Feb 13, 2003 2:17 pm

I'm living in a rent stabilized building which has been sold to UHAB/Settlement Housing Fund, under a 3rd party transfer. They want to do major renovations, requiring us to be moved out of the apartments. I'm struggling to find any info on my rights as to what notice I'm entitled to, whether I can oppose work that seems unnecessary, and whether I can reject unsuitable housing. Plus if I move out, what right do have to return? Nay help please!

First, if you have a lease and it's a rent-stabilized apartment, you almost certainly are going to be able to stay and retain that status.

If it's the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board, it doesn't sound as if they're going to try to evict you, because that's not what they're about (even if you aren't the leaseholder). Check out their Web site at www.uhab.org and give them a call. If that's not who they are, you might want to get in touch with your city council member, a housing group in your area or Department of Housing Preservation.
