Tearing down my building! Help!

Postby ajou » Tue Jan 28, 2003 5:17 pm

Hello-

I just found out from the manager of the restaurant below me that the LL is planning on tearing down my building. This does not surprise me because they have only been giving tenants month by month or 1 year leases with a 60 day cancellation clause(except for myself). I am the only rent stabilized unit left in the building at this point, and my lease ends in August. Neither the LL or the management company have told us anything. Are there any laws or rights to protect or help us in situataion?

Thanks in advance!

Get a lawyer. I'm not kidding.

When you are the lone holdout in a building targetted for demolition, there are ways the LL can legally get you out. However, a good lawyer can usually hold off the LL pretty effectively in court (if you're willing to pay the legal bills)

A smarter approach is to start in the above mentioned direction, but then work it for a high buck buyout.

Email us at tenant@tenant.net. Your rights may depend on many things, but if possible it may be good to save a building. Please email us the address of the building. And yes, get a good tenant attorney.
