retroactive rent surprise

Postby r.bean » Wed Jul 24, 2002 7:21 pm

hello out there,
i moved into a loft with two guys who have been living here for the past two years. their lease expired last year. the LL (who suggested we sign a new lease a year ago and let it drop) has agreed to keep us month to month with a rent increase. this part i get- but she claims that (unbeknownst to us) that there have been 4 rent increases since the original lease was up and now we owe loads of cash in back payment.

what kind of notice should we be receiving on rent increases and if it is legitimate, how long do we have to pay it?
thanks for any attention or directives you might be able to offer.

If the LL wanted an increase she should have asked for it.
