Building sold/still paying old owners/no lease renewal

Postby JARguate » Mon Aug 04, 2003 4:46 pm

I really need some advice. I've been living in this apt for a little over a year. The building was sold at the beginning of this year but the new owners have not taken over yet. It is suppose to be a 3 apt building, but they did have a "studio" on the ground floor, which we found out was illegal. Once they found a buyer, the tenant in the studio and the tenant on the 2nd floor were given eviction notices, to move immediately. We have been told that because of this illegal apartment we aren't required to pay rent, but I'm not sure about that. My lease was up last month, but no eviction notice was given. Tenants on 1st floor were now given eviction notice. I'm living month to month, not sure of what's going to happen. Property manager has been very difficult to get in touch with and not giving us any information. We are not prepared to move ( I have a roommate). Do I have ANY rights? What can I do? I would appreciate your help. Thanks.
